Today is partly sunny and sweltering.

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches. Some of them are dustbathing in the burn barrel; they like the fresh ashes.

EDIT 7/25/25 -- I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/25/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 7/25/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 7/25/25 -- I picked herbs to make omelettes for supper, which also included some cherry tomatoes from yesterday.

It's drizzling a bit.

EDIT 7/25/25 -- I refilled the birdfeeders.

EDIT 7/25/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

Foot issues

Knee is slowly improving, hamstring is slowly improving, foot is getting worse!

Remember that spot on the ball of my right foot that I injured last year, that popped and slid when I walked on it, caused weird feelings in my middle toes (especially the one next to my big toe), and sometimes was painful? I had to buy whole new shoes to deal with it and consistently wear recovery slides?

Eventually it started to slowly get better, and it finally got to the point where it didn't pop even when I stepped on it, only if I manipulated it with my fingers.

Well, on one of my recent long walks (2 weeks ago, I think), I made the mistake of massaging it when I was massaging the rest of my foot for pain relief. I figured out last year that I shouldn't do that, but I thought it was safe this year! Alas, no, the spot has not recovered that much.

I immediately noticed it was popping again around the house. "Dammit, I re-stretched the spot that had been slowly tightening. Fine, it'll get better again like it did last time."

Two days ago, I was out on a short walk about half a block away, and I noticed the weird sensations in my toes. It's hard to explain, but the middle toes feel cooler and also mostly wet. Last year they would feel mostly warm and wet, but right now it's 36 Celsius, so maybe everything feels cool in comparison to that.

This is happening around the house even in my orthopedic slides, and I'm not sure what's up with that. I had noticed that my outdoor slides had deformed due to normal wear and tear (that's what you get for walking 5-8 miles a day in them, I guess), and I was overdue for buying new ones (they're expensive, which is why I was putting them off). It also occurred to me that the insoles in my regular shoes are a year old and probably also flattened, so I've ordered new ones of those.

Hopefully those help! I need to be able to start walking again! I was just starting to envision a future in which my knee and hamstrings were stable enough to allow running again. This weekend will be perfect walking weather, but I may need to stay home, finish revising the latest draft of Peter Keith, and give my foot another week to see if the new footwear helps. We'll see if I actually adhere to that plan. (I continue to badly need a break from writing about Peter Keith.)

I've definitely done this before (and not super long ago, I think) but oh well, a lot of the answers change! Evergreen!

Last song I listened to: I woke up to Lor's $hrek 2 in my head on a loop, so that, I guess.

Favourite colour: nature colours

Currently watching: a terrible playthru of Stardew Valley, S5 of Lower decks (halfway thru, have four days to finish it), episode 2 of Amphibia (lol, also halfway)

Last movie: *consults the document* oh dear, it's been a while. C'è ancora domani (There's Still Tomorrow), from April. (There are 4 movies that I planned to see in July but lbr, it’s the 25th.)

Currently reading: I just finished Piranesi, and I'm just starting A Sweet Sting of Salt

Coffee or tea: both

Sweet/savoury/spicy: savoury-spicy

Relationship status: married

Looking forward to: September, I think. Seeing the Murderbot show. A couple books. Not being responsible for 424892482764 plants at some point.

Current obsessions: a terrible playthru of Stardew Valley?? LOL, not really. But it is language learning 24/7.

Last googled: I tried to find out if anyone else is annoyed by that no Caesars shirt that bsky is selling in the comments of basically every popular post. I love muting shit and I muted that bsky shop 20000000000 times before I realised it was unmutable. Which is rude. Anyway, it appears no one else is bothered, lol.

Last thing you ate and really enjoyed: gochujang chicken last night, w/cucumber salad. Cucumber from my garden :D they're kinda sweet ones, these mojito cucumbers.

Currently working on: no writing, no embroidery, only language suffering :D also working on cleaning a lot bc strangers thru the house today and my uncle visiting in a couple weeks.

I went to add a picture to this post but I spent 10 mins taking 40 pics of a very goofy looking robin today and they are all just ART (VERY goofy) and will have to be their own post at some point!

Silver Elite: Chapter 8

This chapter opens with Wren remembering a nice Mod lady who used to give her candy, but then was turned in by her own son and sent to work in a salt mine. Said son is now an officer in the Command, which just proves to Wren how much the Command sucks. I mean, we knew that. This anecdote is fine, but it also feels misplaced here in the story.

Well, I was in the wizards we don't talk about fandom. That fandom was bonkers. In fact, while I definitely knew it was... out there at the time, it's only recently that I've realized just how out there it was, compared to other fandoms. People have talked about how fandoms used to be nice, and that was not my experience. But it wasn't all bad; I made lifelong friends, after all. And the enthusiasm.  I don't think I've been part of a group of fans quite as enthused as those fans, although Firefly and Our Flag Means Death fans came close.

The second of my first two fandom was ostensibly one website. There were a few others, but this was the one that lasted longest. It was for the Earth's Children book series. The admin founded in in 1996. The website/forum was interesting because while it was technically a fandom, it was really its own thing, a one-of-a-kind community. We talked about the books, we wrote fanfic (not just for the series, but other fandoms as well), however there were threads for gardening and discussing politics and all this other stuff. We talked about our lives. I felt close to those people. The site's still around, though not nearly as active as it once was.

I'm currently in the Schitt's Creek fandom, and I've also dabbled in 911, Heartstopper and Our Flag Means Death in recent years (among other fandoms). Let's be honest, SC was a gateway to 911, Heartstopper and OFMD. :) I've enjoyed them, too, even if current fandom works differently. Actually, most of my Heartstopper activity is one group, in a way harkening back to my days on the aforementioned website.

A lot of wild things have happened in my years of being in fandoms. I've seen friendships form, people fall in love, getting through traumatic situations; I've even seen lives saved. I also remember how we came together during bad global events, in some cases taking headcounts to make sure we were all okay.

It's really a rollercoaster, for better or for worse.

In the middle, beside the text, is a black duck standing atop a pile of books. I'm a little relieved. I mean, not very, I'd rather have the job, but if I'd gotten it then I'd maybe have had to interact with him again and who needs that?

Healing Dramas

just a backup to a post on MDL; boxes indicate other people's posts i was replying to

Healing dramas, however, are a bit heavier, but can turn light at the end after the healing happens. Healing dramas involve some sort of loss, trauma, or deep angst, and then show a calm journey towards overcoming that sadness. You watch it and feel healed, calmed, and revived yourself.

Thai series and movies often have this way of surrounding difficult emotions in warmth and kindness. They have a different rhythm than other countries'. Maybe it will work for you as well.

Yes, I love thai dramas, their culture and genre is very refreshing. I enjoy listening to their language. The only challenge is the platform to watch them , mostly illegal sites

This isn't true for all Thai series. Lakorns (evening soap operas big on melodrama) are harder to find legally, although one31 has several on their youtube with English subtitles (my list here, the calmest I've seen so far (before I got waylaid by Ch 3) is I Feel You Linger in the Air, cut on one31 YT, uncut on Youku's). Lakorn journeys tend not to be calm all the way through, but they're much better IMO at mitigating stress - rather than piling it on like most countries do, they break it with lighter moments, sometimes playful or humorous. I have to avoid most C- and K-drama because of their stress rollercoasters but I fare much better with lakorns.

Journaling: Life in fandom goes through ups and downs. Reminisce about the "wild ride" of your time in fandom or in other online communities.

I feel like there truly was nothing like the 2023 Deduction Star voting in the Identity V community and the complete fallout it caused when the Chinese server voted for Night Watch, a character that, at that point in time, was out for not even a whole month at the time of voting, making him the character who waited the least for his Deduction Star skin. This caused an uproar in the global server fanbase (mainly in the west) being upset "an ugly man" won over "pretty women" (we won't talk about people's inability to realize male characters dominate fandom stuff in the east, including fan voting and merch overall while whales (usually men) will spend money on the very expensive essence skins that are limited and usually something they're looking for when it comes to characters over irl merch).

In general, fan voting for which character will get the skin that happens once a year is sometimes hilarious depending on where you're watching (by that I mean not watching what global players are doing). This year, Chinese fans collectively decided to vote for Nightmare because they knew he doesn't get a lot of skins as he's not that popular of a character and Lawyer, who got voted because of his stage actor, as he was interacting a lot with fans and was very sweet, so they wanted to make him happy by voting for his character.

And now for something completely different! Today's featured episode is from [personal profile] lydamorehouse 's Mona Lisa Over Pod, "American Flagg!" I was looking forward to this episode since she mentioned it was happening but I was delayed due to being away for a week but I finally got to listen to it and it didn't disappoint.

WTF is American Flagg!, you ask, if you are a normal person and not like, a 60-year-old man on the internet like I apparently am. It was a very strange cyberpunk comic by Howard Chaykin that [personal profile] rohmie introduced me to way back in the day, which ran from 1983-88. It's set in the distant year of 2031 where a giant corporation runs the world, everyone lives in malls, and the exiled government rules from Mars, and follows Reuben Flagg, a Jewish former porn star who loses his job to AI and becomes a deputy in the Plexus Rangers. Also there is a talking cat with cybernetic gloves that give him opposable thumbs. It is pulpy and cheesy and often incoherent; I loved it when I read it and haven't looked at it since.

This—and the podcast episode—really ask the question: Does a comic need to be good? This comic was influential in a lot of ways, and it is bad in a lot of ways, and Chaykin definitely has his haters. (Note: I am not one of them, I loved his run on Blackhawk, and I think his art style is cool as hell, despite his obvious. Um. Quirks. As both a writer and artist.) The gender and sexual politics are. Um. The politics-politics are genuinely incoherent, a topic that Lyda and Ka1iban explore in satisfying depth. It's satire, but satire of what exactly?

The critiques in this episode make me like it more, actually? It's much easier to write and discuss a straightforward dystopia—works like Black Mirror or American Flagg's contemporary V for Vendetta that examine one particular social problem and exaggerate it for rhetorical effect. American Flagg! is a hot mess. I did think so at the time; it's very hard to determine what it's critiquing and I don't think that's intentional as such. But it puts the state, or the contested idea of the state, in tension with corporate interests in a way that feels a little more nuanced and prescient than it should be. It doesn't give you anyone to root for, particularly, but more challenging, it doesn't give you any ideology to root for (in a way, that echoes Watchmen, in that the best you can hope for is Nite Owl's wishy-washy, ineffectual liberalism, which it's clear neither the author nor the narrative support). I'm not making it out to be Great Art but I do think it's Interesting Art and there's a reason these two can spend 99 minutes discussing it.

So yeah, I vastly enjoyed this detailed discussion of a comic that I thought everyone had forgotten about.

(Do Transmetropolitan next???)

Two things, both for my parents!

1. My parents are planning on going to Ireland (both Northern and Republic of) for two weeks in the spring, and it is my job to plan their trip. Of course I'll be consulting, like, Rick Steves and other travel guides, but I'd love to hear any recommendations, tips, etc. anyone has!

2. My mom has a new Bible and it's soft-cover and she's trying to find the best solution to make sure it doesn't get all torn up.

I know how to find protective covers like this or this but only in large amounts for library use. I have no idea how to find things for individual use.

Of course she can always just buy some contact paper, but I'd rather come up with something a bit sturdier if I can.

Anyone got any ideas?
